MB orders officials to seek solutions to save fireflies

BY ELAN PERUMAL

SHAH ALAM: All Selangor state executive councillors and department heads have

been ordered to spend three days in Kampung Kuantan to help find a solution to

save the world famous firefly colony there.

“We want to get first-hand information on what is happening in Kampung Kuantan

so that we can find a solution to solve the problems of the dwindling number of

fireflies in the area,” said Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Mohamad Khir Toyo.

He added that the trip would start on Sunday and all the officials would be

required to observe the situation there.

“We will then hold a brainstorming session to look for the best solutions,” Dr

Khir told reporters after chairing the weekly council meeting here yesterday.

As an immediate measure, Dr Khir said, the state government would be planting

more berembang trees along the 10km stretch of the river banks.

This announcement comes in the wake of the criticism by the Sultan of Selangor

Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, who ordered the state to save the firefly colony.

The Sultan said he was very unhappy with government officials who passed on the

responsibility to others.

The Ruler & #8217;s statement came after The Star reported on the dwindling

firefly population and pollution affecting the insects & #8217; natural habitat

along Sungai Selangor.

Dr Khir also revealed that part of earlier efforts to save the colony had hit a

snag as farmers around the Sungai Selangor area refused to use organic farming

as a measure to reduce pollution.

“The farmers are reluctant to apply the organic farming method due to the high

cost involved. They feel organic farming is not practical,” Dr Khir said.
