Under a new training system, Gail Laule has Chawang, the 24-year-old bull elephant, in an enclosure more than double the size of his original home but bordered by steel bars topped with electrically charged wires. "If he gets mad or frustrated and wants to bang the bars, he can do so," Laule told The Straits Times. "Nobody gets hurt." Chawang's enclosure also has a pool, sand pile and a specially constructed retraining chute that the elephant is learning to enter for easy examinations and treatment. The elephant almost gored Gopal Krishnan to death in July 2001 while the two were on their daily walk. "He's been learning fast," Laule was quoted as saying. "His world has changed, but he has adjusted remarkably well."
