Confusion reigns over future of Safari World orangutans

The Nation, August 17, 2004

Confusion and suspicion continue to surround Safari World Zoo with the

reported deaths of 41 orangutans turn¬ing out to be false and the officials

concerned refusing to move the seized wildlife, despite assurances that a

suitable home would be found.

Police checks on Friday found that 36 of the 41 orangutans previously

reported to have died were in fact alive and well in another part of the

zoo, said Police Colonel Chatkanok Kiewsaengsong.

Police will not press additional charges against Safari World Zoo owner Pin

Kiewkacha after he said the report of the animals having died was all a

misunderstanding, Chatkanok said.

“After all, Pin passed the blame on to his workers, saying he had not filed

the report [of the apes’ death],” he said.

Police last week charged Pin with illegally importing 110 orangutans after

the controversy surfaced late last month.

The orangutans are used in a boxing show to entertain zoo-goers.

Even though Pin has been formally charged, it looks as though the 105

orangutan are to stay in the zoo for some time.

The apes should not be moved unless it is absolutely necessary because they

could die or become stressed, said Schwann Thathikorn, caretaker director

of the Centre of International Trade in Endangered Species Management

Authority of Thailand. Police raided the zoo and found the 110 apes last

year, but did not remove them as they had no suitable home for the apes.

The zoo had permits for 12 apes.

we build cars and buildings and start wars etc...and

all that dolphins do is swim in the water, eat fish

and play around. Dolphins believe that they are

smarter for exactly the same reasons. "
