The disease remains confined to 2 ostrich farmsin the Blue Crane Municipal District.Total number of animals in the outbreak:Susceptible: 9000Cases: 1500Deaths: 1000Laboratory where diagnosis was made: Onderstepoort Veterinary Institute.Diagnostic tests used: hemagglutination (HA), hemagglutination inhibition(HI), RT-PCR (1) and sequencing.Causal agent: avian influenza virus subtype H5N2.Source of agent / origin of infection: unknown , under investigation.Mode of spread: direct and indirect contact.Control measures:- - A 30 km-radius quarantine area has been declared around Middleton, in theEastern Cape Province, to contain and control the disease.- - All ostrich farms surrounding the 2 affected farms were put underquarantine. There are no commercial poultry farms in the area and only verylow numbers of backyard poultry.- - All poultry in the area, including ostriches, will be slaughtered, anddestroyed, as a precautionary measure.- - The movement restrictions are enforced by a road block cordon, and thepublic is advised not to take any poultry (including ostriches, birds, andother fowl) or their products, including eggs, out of, or into, theaffected area.- - Exports of poultry, and poultry products, have been voluntarily stoppeduntil the outbreak has been dealt with successfully.- - Control of wildlife reservoirs.- - Movement control .- - Surveillance.- - Screening.- - Vaccination.No indication of the disease has been seen anywhere else in the country.(1) RT-PCR: reverse transcriptase - polymerase chain reactionAnimal Health Information DepartmentOIE- --ProMED-mail[Although this report correctly indicates the disease has never beenreported before, AI, which was non-pathogenic for poultry, occurred inSouth Africa in 1991.
