I have received several photos of the seizure from Edwin Wiek. If anyone

would like copies, send me a private e-mail. The crates were appalling.

This whole situation appears to have resulted from the fight led by the

Indonesian government and Willie Smits to get 100 orangutans smuggled into

Thailand to a Bornean rehab center. There are about 20 adult orangutans at

Safari World as well as the 100 or so youngsters. I don't think so many

orangutans have ever been amassed before. It is not known who brought them

into Thailand but some years ago a powerful Thai dealer brought in a group

of colobus monkeys from Tanzania, most of whom died or were killed by Thai

authorities. Shirley McGreal
