Group hails move to update animals list

 

 

PETALING JAYA: The Wildlife and National Parks Department's move to update its

list of captured animals in private zoos and individual collections has been

given the thumbs-up by Sahabat Alam Malaysia (SAM).

 

However, SAM urged the department to also include aquariums, bird parks,

butterfly parks, reptile and amphibian parks and safari theme parks when

creating the national inventory to ensure that all specimens kept in those

facilities were acquired legally.

 

SAM president S.M. Mohamed Idris said in a statement yesterday that it was

necessary to monitor those animals because the operators did not require a

licence to run their establishments unless the animals kept were on the

protected list.

 

Mohamed Idris said there were also no guidelines to ensure that such

establishments were properly planned, built and run to conform to standards of

the industry, although guidelines were drawn up in 1997 by the then Science,

Technology and Environment Ministry.
