Guest guest
The Korea Times 07-23-2004 By Bae Keun-min Staff Reporter Animal Freedom Korea (AFK), a leading non-governmental organization (NGO) for animal protection, has opened a Web site in English (www.koreananimal.net) to promote Korea's image as an animal-loving country and shed its infamous label as a dog-eating culture. ``The website will be a window to the world to publicize Korea's efforts to promote the welfare of animals,'' AFK president Jo Hee- kyung told The Korea Times. The homepage was established last month with help from the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry (MAF). Jo said her organization decided to join the project as she believes the homepage will not only change Korea's image but also awaken the government to make better efforts for animal welfare. ``We hope the Web site will further motivate the government to enhance animal welfare. If not, there will be nothing to add to the homepage,'' Jo said. In addition to the homepage, the MAF will print 10,000 copies of a brochure in English containing information on animal protection efforts in Korea. ``We will send some 1,000 copies to Korean embassies overseas late this month so they can be distributed to animal protection NGOs,'' an MAF official said. ``The rest will be handed out at the airport to foreigners who enter Korea from next week.'' The government plans to amend the animal protection law to meet the needs of pet lovers and protect mistreated animals. An MAF official said the amended bill will be sent to the National Assembly in October. At the end of March, 2.23 million dogs, cats and other pets were being raised in 758,000 households, according to the ministry. full story: http://times.hankooki.com/lpage/nation/200407/kt2004072316435211980.ht m ~~~*+*~~~*+*~~~*+*~~~*+*~~~*+*~~~*+*~~~*+*~~~*+*~~~~*+*~~~ I abhor vivisection with my whole soul.
