Police are still looking for 48 other suspects. The two men, both in their 40s, were arrested at two separate places along Sungai Taku on Friday and Sunday. State Tourism and Environment Committee chairman Freddie Long said 5kg of sandalwood chips worth about RM3,000 were found in the first suspect's possession. He said another sack of sandalwood chips, its value had yet to be ascertained, was found with the other suspect. Speaking to newsmen after the weekly state exco meeting yesterday, Long said police informed him that they also found various tools, including small axes, at the scenes. “According to police, the suspects also carried camping gears and had food supply that could last them a month. “The suspects also told the police that there were nearly 50 of them scattered in the park to extract sandalwood,” he said. He added that the suspects claimed that they had been in the jungle since middle of last month. Long said the authorities got wind of the illegal activity after a park ranger stumbled upon three foreigners with wood chipping tools on June 23. He said the park authority lodged a report with the police who then deployed a team of General Operations Force personnel from the Senoi Praq unit to track the offenders down. It is learnt that 1kg of grade A sandalwood can fetch some RM8,000 and a fully grown sandalwood tree is valued at RM500,000. <p> ________________________ Your one-stop information portal: The Star Online http://thestar.com.my http://biz.thestar.com.my http://classifieds.thestar.com.my http://cards.thestar.com.my http://search.thestar.com.my http://star-motoring.com http://star-space.com http://star-jobs.com http://star-ecentral.com http://star-techcentral.com 1995-2003 Star Publications (Malaysia) Bhd.
