Foreign experts to help Sarawak set up research labs

MIRI: Two dozen foreign scientists have been enlisted to help set up

biotechnology research facilities to tap the state & #8217;s potential herbal

medicine and plant-related products.

Deputy Chief Minister Tan Sri Dr George Chan Hong Nam said the scientists were

renowned experts in a range of sectors.

“They will help the state government set up a biotechnology research complex in

Samarahan (southern Sarawak) and in Miri.

“The Federal Government has approved our plan to designate Miri and Samarahan

as biotechnology valleys to carry out advanced research projects in fields

relating to the biodiversity in the state.

“The scientists will help determine the kind of infrastructure needed, the type

of facilities required to run the research centres and to study the potential

available based on the inventory of plants and herbs found in the state,” he

said yesterday.

Dr Chan, who is also state Industrial Development Minister and state

Agriculture Modernisation Minister, was speaking to members of the Higher

Education, Research and Development Society of Australasia at Curtin University

of Technology Sarawak Campus.

He added that Sarawak was one of the 12 places in the world identified by the

United Nations as having the most diversified plant and animal life.
