Village leader Salleh Ahmad, 63, said the incident occurred at his orchard at about 7am. He believed a male elephant destroyed the banana trees. Salleh said he tracked down the animal with the help of several villagers after informing the National Forest and Wildlife Protection Department here. He said he and the other villagers tracked the elephant for about 15km, passing Kampung Lebai Saman in Naka, where another elephant rampage was reported on June 7. “We tracked the elephant from Kampung Tok Eng to Kampung Tok Faa and then to Kampung Lebai Saman and the Padang Terap sugarcane field before returning back to Kampung Tok Eng,” Salleh said. He fired two warning shots into the air to chase away the elephant when his group spotted the animal behind some bushes near his orchard at about 4.45pm, some five hours after they had started their search. “We had to do it,” he said, adding that if they had waited for the National Forest and Wildlife Protection Department officers to come, their crops would have been destroyed. Salleh said this was not the first time that such an incident had happened.
