Department acts to stem poaching at park

ON behalf of the Department of Wildlife and National Parks, I would like to

thank H.S. of Tampin for his concern and interest in the conservation of the

biological diversity of the country, in particular, the overall management of

Taman Negara, “Act to protect Taman Negara”, (The Star, May 20).

The department through its Enforcement Division and Rhino Patrol Unit has

initiated joint border operations with the armed forces to check the illegal

collection of gaharu and poaching in the national park.

The illegal hunting and gathering of natural resources by armed foreign

nationals have serious implications not just on our biodiversity resources but

also on our national security.

We are determined to stem this new and emerging menace.

Some of these poachers have been arrested and taken to court recently.

We are continuing our efforts by patrolling Taman Negara and other protected

areas in the country with greater intensity.

We appreciate any new information regarding these illegal activities from our

indigenous population, local communities and visitors to Taman Negara and other

protected areas.

Regarding the unchecked sprouting of boarding houses and riverboat restaurants

outside Taman Negara boundaries where we have no jurisdiction, the department is

in a dilemma.

Good eco-tourism practices require the involvement of local communities in the

management of a protected area.

But some of these activities do have undesirable impacts as H.S. highlighted.

As for the dumping of wastes into the Tembeling River, the department is

seeking the co-operation of the local authorities to enforce general hygiene and

possibly limit the number of floating restaurants.

The department welcomes feedback and information regarding the conservation and

management of our biological diversity.

We shall treat all information, especially with regard to poaching, with the

highest confidence.

DATUK MUSA NORDIN,

Director-General,

Department of Wildlife and National Parks,

Kuala Lumpur.
