An example of human-wildlife conflict. As agricultural activities take over

habitat, both tigers and prey are forced into areas of human habitat. True

" man-eaters " are rare.

Kuala Lumpur - A 13-year-old Malaysian boy was mauled to death after two

tigers attacked him in a jungle in the northeastern Kelantan state, reports

said on Thursday.

Ismail Adam was following his father to a rubber plantation through the

jungle when two tigers attacked him.

Ismail's father, upon hearing his son's screams, tried to chase the animals

away by shouting and hurling clods of earth, the Star daily said.

The victim, who suffered severe gashes in his neck, was pronounced dead on

arrival at a nearby clinic.

State Wildlife and National Parks Department deputy director Mohamad Ismail

said a team had been sent to the area to capture the tigers, the report

said.

Tigers are classified as one of the country's most seriously endangered

animals, along with the Asian elephant and rhinoceros.

The World Wide Fund for Nature estimates there are some 600 - 650 tigers

left in Malaysia, from close to 5 000 a decade ago.
