New Straits Times - Letters

Let us not over-exploit our natural resources

Apr 08:

WHILE welcoming the setting up of the Ministry of Natural Resources and

Environment, Sahabat Alam Malaysia calls on the new minister, Datuk Adenan

Satem, to give greater attention and focus on the need to protect and

conserve our natural resources.

We view with caution the statement by Adenan, as reported in the papers,

that the target of the ministry is " to create more wealth. Land and forests

are our national assets which we must not leave dormant " (NST, April 6).

While we appreciate the minister's concern for generating wealth out of

natural resources, wealth generation should come from conservation and

protection of such resources and not from continued exploitation.

It is high time the Federal Government found appropriate financial

mechanisms to encourage States to protect, conserve and rehabilitate their

natural resources if we value the ecological services provided by these

resources.

This is where the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment can play a

vital role i.e. in finding ways and means to support State Governments to be

more concerned for environmental protection and conservation, rather than

further exploitation.

S.M. MOHAMED IDRIS

President

Sahabat Alam Malaysia
