Support Legislation to Clean up the Cruise Ship Industry Cruise Ships provide millions of passengers the luxury of enjoying the oceans from a unique perspective. Ironically, however, cruise ships pose a significant threat to our oceans and the marine life they support. Each year cruise ships carry millions of people to some of the world's most pristine and sensitive ecosystems, all along the way dumping millions of gallons of pollution in our marine ecosystems. This pollution threatens our ocean life and coasts, as well as the communities that rely upon them. In 2002, The Ocean Conservancy published Cruise Control, a comprehensive examination of the cruise industry and its impact on our oceans. The report identified a dangerous lack of environmental regulations, punctuated by numerous regulatory loopholes. The Ocean Conservancy recommended national legislation to set in place strong environmental protections for our oceans and coastal communities. We have since worked with Members of Congress to craft such legislation, entitled the Clean Cruise Ship Act of 2004. We expect this bill to be introduced within coming days and the support of your Senators and Representative will be critical to its eventual passage. Please respond to this alert today to urge them to cosponsor this important legislation.
