Monkeys go on rampage Many peacocks killed in Malacca bird park

CHINA Press Daily reported yesterday the rampage by a group of wild monkeys at a

bird park in Malacca which left many peacocks dead .

The monkeys were said to have gone wild and violently attacked the peacocks on

Monday. It said the birds were mutilated, exposing their organs and intestines.

Many peacocks were killed, and according to a supervisor at the park, such

attacks had been taking place since last year.

The daily said it was believed that encroaching development on the

monkeys & #146; habitat & #150; a forested area near the park & #150; was a factor

in the attacks.

The RM5mil bird park was officially opened in 1999 but was closed last October.

It originally had 130 peacocks, 16 eagles, five ostriches and other birds.

Despite the closure, the birds were kept in the park, but the population

dwindled drastically over the years.

Of the five ostriches, two died of illness, one of old age and another was

stolen.

Yesterday & #146;s attack left the park with only seven peacocks.

The seven birds are difficult to spot as they hid themselves from visitors for

fear of being attacked, the paper said.

China Press Daily also reported about a former triad member who advised

teenagers not to join secret societies.

He said he was an example, as they could see that his life was now full of

regrets.

Relating his experiences, Liao Mu Biao said he joined Hong Men (a well-known

notorious triad) when he was 14 years old.

Liao, who hails from Pahang, said he did not even complete his primary

education.

& #147;I was selling vegetables in a wet market and was always caught in fights

with people, & #148; he said.

He told the paper that the life of a triad member was not as exciting and

thrilling as seen in movies or drama series.

Unlike the old days, triad members were now involved in loan-shark activities,

drug trafficking, prostitution and violent murders, said Liao.

Liao advised parents to pay attention to their children so that they would not

be influenced by unscrupulous parties.

To recruit members, triads even assigned members to penetrate schools, said

Liao.

& #147;I do not wish others to make the mistakes I have made and cannot erase

from my life.

& #147;My life is full of regrets and I take every opportunity to warn teenagers

not to make similar mistakes.

& #147;Do not join triads. It will destroy your future and you will hurt your

family, & #148; he said.
