Dying music

A SPECIAL brand of music greeted visitors upon entry to the Putra World Trade

Centre exhibition hall at the Seventh Meeting of the Conference of the Parties

to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP 7), courtesy of orang asli couple

Teter Itam, 62, and Engkok Mak Joi, 60,

Teter and Engkok, who are from the Semelai indigenous group in Tasek Bera,

Pahang, enthralled visitors with a quaint performance of traditional music

played on their own handcrafted musical instruments & #8211; the Gambang, a

percussion instrument made out of several pieces of wood suspended over two

rattan strings, and the Keranting, a guitar-like instrument made from bamboo.

Teter has been playing the instruments ever since she was a child, but she

complained that the youths in their village now are not interested in learning

the instrument.

“The songs we play here were passed down by our ancestors and they will be lost

in the future because the young ones do not want to learn them,” she said.

The couple was performing at the United Nations Development Program & #8211;

Global Environment Facility Small Grants Programme booth near the main entrance

of the exhibition hall.

They are part of the Semelai Association for Boating and Tourism (SABOT), which

is a community effort to promote tourism activities that will benefit the

Semelai at Tasek Bera. & #8211; By Michael Cheang<p>
