AR-News: China Halts Poultry Imports From U.S.

BEIJING - China banned U.S. poultry imports Tuesday to ease growing fears

about bird flu, announcing in an emergency notice that any American fowl

that have already arrived at its ports would be returned or destroyed.

China's ban on U.S. poultry follows similar bans by Japan, Malaysia,

Singapore and South Korea, after officials in the U.S. state of Delaware

reported a mild form of avian flu in a flock there.

Prompt reaction to the Delaware outbreak likely prevented the flu from

spreading, according to Corrie Brown, an infectious animal disease expert

at the University of Georgia's College of Veterinary Medicine. Tests

showed nearby flocks to be free of the disease, Delaware officials said.

Further test results were pending.

AR-News: (US-de) Chicken still flying from Delaware shelves

DOVER - Friday's announcement that avian influenza was discovered in a

flock of chickens in southern Kent County seems to have had little impact

on people buying chicken from local grocery stores.

The destruction of 12,000 chickens on the infected farm Saturday seemed to

have caught many Downstate residents unaware Monday.

" This is the first I've heard of it, " said Kathy Schuller of Marydel, Md.,

who was buying chicken at an Acme grocery store on U.S. 13 in Dover.

Mr. Boyer said the avian influenza news, coming so quickly on the heels of

last month's discovery of mad cow disease in the United States, was

especially troubling.

Frozen chicken from the two stores comes primarily from California and

Arkansas, while fresh chicken is usually from Delmarva.
