1. Please Tell PETA & WSPA to Help Keep all Korean Dogs & Cats

Protected as Pets

We appreciate the support that all international organizations have

given to us over the years to save the dogs and cats of Korea,

especially from their members. However, right now, it is critical

that our friends worldwide are united in support of the demands of

the millions of animal lovers in Korea, ready to seize this moment,

and end all killing and torture of dogs and cats; supporting their

momentum will make this happen.

The World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA) has been

inconsistent with its message to the Korean Government about ending

the killing and abuse of all dogs and cats; including supporting

efforts to legalize dogs as livestock (hoping to improve their

treatment). The People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA)

only demand the end of torture and abuse without commenting on

current legislative efforts to legalize dog and cat consumption.

The more consistent our message is, the less room the Government will

have to evade our demands. There are no greater demands that will

save the dogs and cats of Korea than those made by its own people and

by their organizing efforts within Korean society. When international

organizations sidestep their organizing efforts and demands, they

undermine their power, and help to legitimize the very easy

compromise for the Government to legalize dogs as livestock. Without

cooperating and learning from Korean based organizations, they can

make very misinformed decisions. Their actions can easily play into

the hands of nationalist sentiments that wrongly declare dog eating

as a traditionally important aspect of their culture.

Please urge PETA & WSPA to demand that the Korean Government include

all dogs and cats as pets requiring protection under the draft

amendment to the 1991 Animal Protection Law and demand the end to

torture and killing of all dogs and cats.

2. Please Tell IDA to Stop Playing into the Hands of Korean Government

In Defense of Animals (IDA) recently made the mistake of quickly

supporting Government Legislation without first understanding its

complete meaning. IDA, in an attempt to take credit for what it

unwittingly thought was a progressive amendment proposal by the

Korean Government, encouraged the Government that it had the support

of the international community and could ignore the demands of the

Korean based organizations who understood what was really being

proposed. IDA was unaware of the secretive tactics often used by the

Korean Government to provide loopholes for the dog and cat butchers

and the weak enforcement standards they have used to appease the

international community. Please tell IDA not to allow themselves to

be used by the Korean Government any further.
