Girl injured after elephant tramples on her at fair site

 

 

PENANG: A 12-year-old girl sustained serious injuries after an elephant at the

Pesta site in Sungai Nibong here trampled her.

 

The girl had gone to the site at about 4am on Sunday with two friends to look

for another friend, who was working there.

 

According to the girl & #039;s father, who wished to be known only as Ho, the

girl and her friends had stopped to feed a baby elephant that was brought in

from Thailand for rides at the trade fair.

 

& #147;A sleeping adult elephant, believed to be the (baby elephant & #146;s)

mother, suddenly woke up and charged at my daughter and her friends.

 

& #147;They quickly fed her fruits but that did not pacify the animal which then

attacked my daughter with its tusks. She fell and the elephant trampled her with

its forelimbs, & #148; he said at the Penang Hospital yesterday.

 

He added that his daughter & #146;s friends used bananas to lure the elephant

away from her. His daughter suffered a fractured rib cage and other injuries.

 

The 35-year-old hawker also said he was only informed of the incident seven

hours later & #150; at about 11am.

 

It was learnt that the elephant owner has lodged a police report stating that

the attack was a result of the students provoking the animals.
