Guest guest
Scots MEP wins majority backing for dog furs ban http://www.news.scotsman.com/politics.cfm?id=1388562003 A SCOTTISH MEP has won majority support in the European Parliament for a ban on the trade of cat and dog skins. More than 300 MEPs have signed up to a landmark declaration supporting a trade ban promoted by Tory MEP Struan Stevenson, who lives in Edinburgh. The leader of the European Parliament, Pat Cox, will now instruct the European Commission to draft legislation outlawing the practice to reflect the wishes of the European Parliament. The move is only the fifth time in its history that the European Parliament has obtained a majority of MEPs’ signatures on a declaration. Today, Mr Stevenson said: " I am delighted that we are now witnessing the beginning of the end to this unnecessary and barbaric trade. " Aside from the cruelty these animals face, the success of the declaration represents a victory for consumers who were duped into buying goods made from animal skins carrying bogus labels and later found to be cat and dog fur. " Mr Stevenson added: " I have been appalled by the mass slaughter of innocent animals in China to feed this unjustified market. " Most of the skins are destined for fashion goods or novelty items in Europe which cannot possibly offset the cruel rearing, cramped living conditions or the barbaric killing of more than two million animals each year.
