Nearby, dozens of other dogs to be slaughtered wailed together as they saw the companion was killed. This was a scene happened on the railway beside the Shun Yi Bird and Fish Market yesterday. °°°° " It's too bloody! " said Mr. Zhang. At 10:Am yesterday, he guided the reporter to the railway near the market, by the both sides of the south railway, over 10 dogs were tied on the railway. Under a signal light, there's a pool of dark blood, the pawls of dogs scattered on the ground. Obviously, heaps of times of killing had ever been happened here. °° Around 10:30, the people crowded, besides the dog sellers and the dog-meat buyers, there's still a lot of visitors. A man was sharpening a knife to kill the first dog today. He chose a black dog and give him a pat, the dog wagged his tail, he did not aware what will happen. Suddenly, the butcher tightened the rope around the dog's neck, the dog was pressed on the ground, the knife stabbed into his throat like a lightning, the blood spurted out. Half meter away, another dog cried. °°°° " 8 yuan per catty, there's still two others in the tricycle. " The butcher shouted. 20 minutes later, the whole dog-skin was skinned. °° During the affair, several trains passed. The crowded people had to dodged away hurry-scurry as the sound of train heard. " it's too dangers, " said Mr. Zhang. °°°° " Almost one year, every Sunday, it became the day of dog trade. " said of Mr. Zhang, every time a dog was killed, the others would cry loudly, the resident nearly could not be disburden. °° At the spot, the reporter did not see the quarantine officer around. " although the dog was killed lively, who can guarantee the dog meat has no the problem of sick? It's not safe to make this kind of meat flow into the consumptive market. " many residents hope that the concerning department could give a management to this dog slaughter scene. °°°° from Jing Hua Times " Beijing , A17, 15, Dec. 2003 Translated by Wangpei --

Guest guest
From Anneleise Smillie: Hi Jeremy, As you say it can be very overwhelming to receive so many sad messages each day on the aapn network - but it is an important way of keeping everyone informed about what is going on and I can assure you that there are many people and many groups across Asia doing their absolute best to start changing things and creating a new and positive future for the animals of Asia. I think everyone would agree that it is heart breaking to read such stories as this and perhaps we do need to hear more positive news from time time, because great things really are happening as the result of the hard work of groups working on the ground in Asia. At Animals Asia our work focuses on the long term solutions and the 'bigger picture' - We are working very hard with government departments and local communities to find 'win-win' solutions that really do give the animals a reason to hope and see education as a vital first step towards mass improvement of animal welfare in Asia. Our umbrella campaign, " Friends...or Food? " continues to highlight the plight of dogs and cats killed for food, whilst promoting dogs and companion animals as ambassadors for all species. To find out more please visit our website http://www.animalsasia.org/beInformed/campaigns/caasia001.html There are links to our successful Dr. Dog animal therapy programme which is continually expanding (with plans to start in 3 new provinces in India next year, as well as a major re-launch in China) and we're also in the final stages of producing our informative " Friends..or Food? " VCD, which features Eddie - our rescued market dog, who is now working as a Dr. Dog ambassador and helping to give dogs across Asia a voice. You can also find out more about dedicated Detective Simba, who is set to begin work with the Beijing Customs Department next year to sniff out illegal animal parts at the airport - another wonderful animal ambassador, who is clearly showing how much we can benefit from sharing our lives with companion animals. Plans for 2004 also include the development of educational materials for primary schools and responsible pet care initiatives, as well as funding innovative new Dr. Dog workshops to promote and restore respect for all animals in HK and Guangzhou - the dog eating capital of China. Having spent many years in Asia, we know how fast things can change - the success of our Dr Dog programme which sees over 300 Dr Dogs spreading warmth and love in countries all over Asia, is testament to the changing attitudes towards animals. Indeed we know already from working with various government departments in Beijing and Sichuan Province, that there is definitely a growing recognition and sympathy towards the issue of animal welfare (which did not exist 10 years ago) and, like the China Bear Rescue project which is becoming more and more successful as a result of good relations with the government and local community, we feel that the issue of cruelty to domestic animals can be similarly addressed. The aapn network is a very valuable way for groups in Asia to exchange news stories and information and I can assure you that we all do care as deeply for the animals as you do. If you would be interested I can arrange to mail you an information folder from the recent Asia for Animals Conference which was held in Hong Kong in September and attended by over 120 people representing 50 different animal groups in Asia. It includes many of the papers and presentations on the work that is going on across Asia to help animals in need and I think you would find it very interesting and hopefully uplifting. Please let me know if you would be interested in this and I can arrange to mail you a copy. If you have any further queries please do not hesitate to contact me directly at any time. Best wishes, Anneleise Smillie Projects Coordinator Animals Asia Foundation Find out more about our new " Friends.... or Food? " campaign as well as the historic " China Bear Rescue " by visiting the Animals Asia Foundation website at http://www.animalsasia.org
