IDA and the Korean update

Dear Kristie:

The " brazen " ness was all IDA's. Your activist letter quite

" brazenly " implies that the result of IDA's demonstration was the

announcement the next day that the Korean government was considering

revision of the law.

Telling your members to write in support of the law which is

still being negotiated was not only premature, but may be harmful as

well, since it appears that once again the Korean government is

attempting to differentiate between " pet dogs and cats " and " edible

dogs and cats. " What Korean animal advocates do not need is for

westerners to be writing to the government in support of that.

I am well aware of the " inroads " IDA has tried to make with

KAPS, which resulted in KAPS demanding that IDA cease using KAPS and

IAKA photographs in IDA fundraising solicitations and on the IDA

website. I have given you permission to use my own photographs of

dogs and cats in the Korean Moran Market, as long as they are

credited to ANIMAL PEOPLE and are not used to undermine animal

welfare efforts in Korea -- which the IDA activist letter may well

be doing.

>Dear Kim and all concerned,

>IDA is by no means trying to take credit for such. We were issuing a

>campaign update about the demonstration and reporting breaking news, for

>which we were hoping our members would write in support of. No where

>does it say that because of our work/meetings/etc. this occurred. I

>apologize if it has been interpreted as so. We are aware of KAPS' hard

>work and as you know, have attempted numerous times to make inroads with

>them to no avail. We have established contact with another organization,

>Animal Friends Korea, who are working toward the same goal, although

>they are not as large a group as KAPS. I hope that you will not make

>such brazen accusations in the future.

>Dear Eliott and Kristie:

> That In Defense of Animals would try to take credit for the

>South Korean government statement that they are in discussion with

>animal welfare groups about possible re-drafting of the law is

>NOTHING SHORT OF OUTRAGEOUS!

>

> Talks between the Korean animal groups and the Korean

>government have been going on for a long time and are still going on.

>The law has not yet been revised, and sources tell me that it is not

>at all certain that animal welfare advocates will be satisfied with

>the final revisions proposed by the government.

>

> No representative of In Defense of Animals has ever been in

>Korea, and IDA has no connection with any Korean animal welfare

>years of heart-breaking work by Korean animal activists -- most

>notably sisters Sunnan and Kyenan Kum, founders of the Korean Animal

>Protection Society and International Association for Korean Animals

>(respectively) -- and their long-term supporters when all IDA has

>ever done for Korean animals was put together a few picket lines,

>fundraising solicitations based on Korean animal cruelty.

Something to think about: We believe that the Golden Rule

applies to animals, too. We don't accept the prevailing notion

that " people come first' " or that " people are more important than

animals. " Animals feel pain and suffer just as we do, and it is

almost always humans making animals suffer and not the other way

around. Yet in spite of how cruelly people behave towards animals

-- not to mention human cruelty to other humans -- we are supposed to

believe that humans are superior to other animals. If people want

to fancy themselves as being of greater moral worth than the other

creatures on this earth, we should begin behaving better than they

do, and not worse. Let's start treating everyone as we would like

to be treated ourselves.
