Guest guest
The Island Saturday 13th December 2003 Opinion -- State sponsored butchery The Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development is now spending heavily on advertising in the print and electronic media the benefits of consuming chicken and beef. I wonder whether it is not in contravention of Article 9 of the Constitution of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka? This Article says that ‘The Republic of Sri Lanka shall give to Buddhism the foremost place and accordingly it shall be the duty of the state to protect and foster the Buddha Sasana....’ How can it foster and protect the ‘Sasana’ when it is breaking the spirit of the Constitution as well as breaking a cardinal principle of Buddha’s teaching ‘‘panati pata veramani sikka padam...’’ By these advertisements the Government is also indirectly promoting butchery. As it is the print and electronic media is inundated with ‘meaty’ advertisements. Why cannotthe Government promote milk production instead of meat production? Perhaps it does not want to hurt the multi-national milk production companies. W. D. S. Perera Polgasowita _______________ Tired of slow downloads and busy signals?
