E-mail : minister

Dear Minister HUH, SANG-MAN,

I am writing you today on behalf of In Defense of Animals' (IDA's) more than

80,000 members thank you for the decision to toughen animal protection laws

and to ask you to use your influence to enforce animal cruelty laws, which

prevent the torture and slaughter of dogs for food.

Each year, two million dogs are electrocuted, strangled, or bludgeoned to

death in South Korea. Then they are boiled, skinned, browned by a torch, chopped

up, and eaten. Many of these dogs have been stolen from families that love

them. The majority of the dogs are homeless, captured by butchers, kept packed

in

filthy conditions, and sold in open markets.

Many Koreans believe that eating dog meat is healthy while others believe it

is a delicacy. To add insult to injury, some dogs are killed by being beaten

to death, burnt, or hung to make the meat more tender.

Although Korean law forbids the sale and consumption of dog meat and the

country's Animal Protection Law considers dogs to be " domestic pets, "

authorities

turn a blind eye to this horror and thus give their unspoken blessing to the

gruesome trade. Fortunately, the vast majority of Koreans don't eat dog meat,

but those who do must be stopped.

Animal advocates the world over are outraged that the Korean government

hasn't taken an active role in curtailing these abuses. During the World Cup in

2002, protests took place in the United States and in many cities overseas.

I hope that after considering this information you do everything in your

power to unequivocally enforce Korea's own law prohibiting the sale and

consumption of dogs for food. Thank you for your time and attention to this very

important global issue. I look forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely,

(Your Name)
