Guest guest
New Straits Times Letter to the Editor Independent probe into breeding programme letters Dec 1: As a member of the IUCN/SSC Asian Rhinoceros Specialist Group, I am concerned by the report " Death last year also caused by colisepticaemia " (NST, Nov 25). If it is true, I would ask the Government and the Ministry of Science, Technology and the Environment to halt the Sumatran rhinoceros captive breeding programme by the Malaysian Rhino Foundation. I would also urge an independent inquiry into the circumstances that led to the death of all the rhinos. While an American zoo can breed a Sumatran rhino, other facilities (in Sungai Dusun and in Sabah, the UK and other zoos in the US) have 100 per cent, 75 per cent, 50 per cent and 25 per cent mortality rates respectively. Thus, our Sungai Dusun captive breeding facility holds the world record for the worst disaster in any captive breeding of rare and endangered species. Future conservation of the rare and endangered Sumatran rhinoceros in Malaysia must be focused and directed on programmes of habitat management and protection. Captive management is a short-term solution. MOHD TAJUDDIN ABDULLAH Universiti Malaysia Sarawak
