Illinois Residents, Help Stop Horse Slaughter PETFINDER HAPPY TAIL OF THE WEEK: GOLDIE ROCKS Heidi Willie was searching on Petfinder.com, an online database of homeless animals across the country, when a particular animal on the Connecticut-based Meriden Humane Society's page caught her eye. Goldie was the name of the senior female bulldog/boxer mix who had been abandoned by her owner, and her photo was marked " URGENT. " " She was in danger of being euthanized because of her fearfulness and her age, " explains Heidi, who made an appointment to meet Goldie the following Saturday. When she and her husband first encountered the dog, Goldie was shaking and shivering in a corner. Explains Heidi, " She was so scared and confused and depressed because she had been dumped by her family. " The Willies fell in love with Goldie and brought her home that very day. " It took awhile for her to come out of her shell in her new home with us, " recalls Heidi, " but she soon learned that a dog's life in the Willie household is like that of royalty. Goldie passed away two years after being adopted. " We taught her that not all people abandon their precious pets when they become inconvenient, " says Heidi. " Goldie had the best two years of her life while she was with us. Just knowing that makes the short time we had with her so worth it for us. " P.S. You may have noticed that we've been featuring a lot of older animals in our Happy Tails lately. That's because we've declared this November as the first annual Adopt-A-Senior-Pet Month. For more on canine and feline senior citizens who come already trained and all ready for another chance at a good life, please take a look at our cybermaterials at ASPCA.org. Back to Top PLANNING A TRIP WITH TOTO THIS HOLIDAY SEASON? PLEASE READ ON. You know the old saying--there's no place like home for the holidays. And for many families, getting there involves a plane ride. This year, the ASPCA is asking pet owners to think twice about bringing their pets along on commercial airlines. The Air Transport Association has reported in the past that approximately 5,000 pets have been injured, lost or killed during transport. Although Congress has passed a law requiring airlines to establish a separate reporting system if an animal becomes lost or hurt, the conditions under which animals are shipped have not changed. Animals continue to be shipped in cargo holds that are not temperature-controlled. " Unless your animal is small enough to fit under your seat and can be brought into the cabin, " says Lisa Weisberg, ASPCA Senior Vice President of Government Affairs and Public Policy, " the ASPCA recommends pet owners not to ship their animal by air. " For more on travel safety, please visit ASPCA online. Back to Top SAY HELLO--AND LET 'EM KNOW YOU CARE! Support the ASPCA every time you call the ones you love. Back to Top NEW CAMPAIGN LAUNCHED TO BRING DOGS OUT OF THE COLD ASPCA News Alert readers, we know you consider your pampered pooch to be a big part of the family. But not all dogs are so lucky. To help raise awareness of the many canines who spend their lives chained or penned outside, Tammy Grimes, founder of Dogs Deserve Better, is leading a campaign to bring the family dog back into the home. " Dogs Deserve Better stresses the point that dogs are pack animals, " explains the ASPCA's Jacque Schultz, CPDT, National Shelter Outreach/Companion Animal Programs Advisor, " and as such will watch over the family better when treated to a more comfortable, companionable life. " For more information about the campaign and how you can help, please visit Dogs Deserve Better online. Back to Top ILLINOIS RESIDENTS, HELP STOP HORSE SLAUGHTER!
