Guest guest
ANIMAL LIBERATION GROUP SHOULD BE DEREGISTERED AFTER CRUEL AND DANGEROUS ATTACK ON 70,000 SHEEP NSW Shadow Minister for Agriculture, Duncan Gay has joined the widespread condemnation of an Australian animal liberation group for what he has called an act of sabotage that could end up costing Australian farmers millions of dollars. “This incident has discredited and disgraced Animal Liberation South Australia †Mr Gay said today. Animal Liberation South Australia contaminated the feed of about 70,000 sheep bound for the Middle East on Tuesday. Their activists introduced pork meal and ham to the sheep’s feed and water, ostensibly to make them unacceptable to Islamic nations and thus threaten Australia’s $1 billion live export industry. The animals were destined to be loaded onto the Al Kuwait carrier the next day, destination Middle East. “This wasn’t only an act of economic terrorism – it was also unbelievably risky and cruel. “Mad cow or BSE, is spread primarily through contaminated meat in feed, this stunt could have created a nightmare for Australia’s already struggling farming industry. “We have seen recently in Canada how a Mad Cow scare in May of this year has devastated the economy and beef farming, the disease is still costing Canada as much as US$15m a day. “After the 1997 Mad Cow scare in Europe, Australia introduced preventative legislation that says sheep and cattle are not to be fed meat or bone meal. “There were also animal health reasons for this law. The feeding of meat products to sheep is unbelievably cruel. As herbivores, their digestive systems can’t process meat products. It just beggars belief that a group claiming to fight for animal rights could potentially condemn 70,000 sheep to death by trying to make them eat pork meal. Mr Gay said that while Veterinary officers are still testing whether any sheep had actually eaten the contaminated food, their future is now at risk as a direct result of this act of sabotage. If sheep are found to have eaten the pork they could be destroyed. “This incident had caused massive disruption to the industry. Either the activists are too stupid to realize the danger and illegality of their actions or else are hypocrites that don’t care at all about animal rights.†“This group should be deregistered immediately.†Media Contact: Duncan Gay 02 9230 2329 – 0428 298 137 Sophie Herron 02 9230 3360 – 0400 032 326 ___________ Animail.com - " Saving Animals & the Environment One E-Mail At A Time.
