Ministry: We can’t probe Zoo Negara

PUTRAJAYA: The Science, Technology and Environment Ministry cannot monitor or

investigate Zoo Negara over reports that some of the 540 animals kept there had

died in 2001 and last year.

Its deputy minister Datuk Zainal Dahalan said this was because Zoo Negara was

run by a private organisation and thus, did not come under its purview.

“It is run by the Malaysian Zoological Society. The Government only gives it a

yearly grant of some RM8.5mil for its expenditure and upkeep.

“Therefore, it is not up to us to comment on how the zoo is run. That was one

of the reasons why there was a proposal to set up a new zoo near Wetlands (Paya

Indah Wetlands in Selangor),” he said here yesterday.

“We have already planned what kind of concept the new zoo will take. But the

Cabinet has yet to decide on it. We’ll only announce it to the public later as

details are still being discussed.”

Zainal was asked to comment on a statement by Love Your Pets Society president

Prof Datuk Hamdan Adnan that zoos should come under the supervision of an

enforcing body to ensure animals kept there were protected.

Hamdan had said the ministry must monitor private zoos after they had been

given permits to cage and exhibit wild animals.

On the Sumatran Rhinoceros breeding programme in Sungai Dusun, Zainal said it

would be put on hold as the remaining animals in the programme had died.
