Guest guest
IN BRIEF: Wildlife traders busted Published on Nov 3, 2003 Forestry Police yesterday arrested 20 wildlife traders and seized more than 400 wild animals worth about Bt50 million in a raid at the Weekend Market at Chatuchak. The large number of animals seized surprised conservationists since it was not the first time police had raided the market, which is notorious as the biggest place for the illegal wildlife trade in Bangkok. “I don’t understand why the market is still operating since the traders have been arrested many times and the animals seized,” said one conservationist who asked not to be named. Most of the protected animals seized were red-whiskered bulbuls, an endangered bird species. Other species found included squirrels, turtles and slow lorises. Last week, police raided an illegal wildlife slaughterhouse in Nonthaburi’s Sai Noi district. Carcasses of endangered animals including bears, snakes and tigers were found.
