Guest guest
International support is needed by the Homeless Animals Protection Society of Ethiopia to stop a massacre of dogs being conducted by " conservationists " in a purported attempt to stop a rabies epidemic among the endangered Ethiopian wolves, which would never have gotten started if the Ethiopian Wolf Conservation Programme had only vaccinated the wolves with oral rabies vaccine (which could and should have been done several years ago). Instead, to cover their own failure to protect the wolves, dogs in the area of Bale National Park are being murdered by these " conservationists " and/or their agents. Dogs are being shot in front of the humane education office of HAPS, obviously to intimidate them, as they were the first to alert the international animal protection community to the presence of disease among the wolves and to speak out against the massacre of the dogs. The Born Free Foundation is funding the Ethiopian Wolf Conservation Programme along with the World Wildlife Fund and the IUCN. --Kim Bartlett, publisher of ANIMAL PEOPLE Newspaper Envelope-to: anpeople " Homeless Animals Protection Society " <haps-eth Getting an international support Tuesday, 04 Nov 2003 01:25:52 +0300 Our Dearest Kim, We did not go back to Dinsho since yesterday. We waited for the response from the people who decided to kill the dogs as a solution for the disease outbreak among the endangered Ethiopian wolves, but no one responded and they have continued shooting dogs every where. What makes us very sad and sick is that they have also started shooting dogs in front of our branch office where we started humane education and got supporters of our idea from the local community, especially the children. This is done by the third group purposely to let our head down and lose hope because they are upset that we informed the issue to the world. We do not know how we can inform the international community to stop this. Please advise! Something to think about: We believe that the Golden Rule applies to animals, too. We don't accept the prevailing notion that " people come first' " or that " people are more important than animals. " Animals feel pain and suffer just as we do, and it is almost always humans making animals suffer and not the other way around. Yet in spite of how cruelly people behave towards animals -- not to mention human cruelty to other humans -- we are supposed to believe that humans are superior to other animals. If people want to fancy themselves as being of greater moral worth than the other lifeforms on this earth, we should begin behaving better than they do, and not worse. Let's start treating everyone as we would like to be treated ourselves.
