Mr.Jayantha Jayawardena and Rajitha Ratwatta were two memebrs of the organising comittee of this .How can they conserve the elephants when they haven`t invited any of the Assistant Directors from the Department of Wild life Conservation? There were Sri Lankan experts .They were not invited. They say symposium was a wastage of money. These people who call themselves as experts do collect funds for their own survival . In 2000 Sunday leader January 30 (Sri lankan news paper) `Other issues raised by Jayawardena are that since that population of tame elephants is fast dwindling they could be sold to selected individuals or temples that have the financial capability and the experience to look after elephants.Selections must be based on pre-set criteria and not to satisfy political requests he said. The elephants will have to be trained by experienced mahouts to adjust to their new lives. On the other hand if the animals are trained to work they could earn at least a part of their keep.` This clearly shows Mr Jayantha Jayawardena is not helping elephant conservation or welfare of these animals. ..Jayawardena was quiet when his brother buit a hotel which is named as elephant corridor hotel in Sigiriya It was a mystery how they managed to build this and the Director Wild life Conservation has given permission .Those days Mr Jayantha Jayawardena was the project Director of the Asian Development Bank`s `s Protected Area Management and Wild Life project. Many questioned about his qualifications for that job and it was reported that he was asked to resign ,but managed to continue as a consultant by political influence. Now Mr jayawardena and Mr Ravi Corea who has a wild life conservation Society in U.S.A has a plan to start a elephant walk through hotel in Hibiliyakada .This is also an elephant corridor.People of the area have protested against that saying that will destroy their heritage. When they build hotels they feed elephants with food and salt. Then these elephants go to villages and destroy the houses to eat salt and do damages to their crops . The local authority at Aranayake has requested six elephants from the elephant orphanage to be given to a Vedamahaththaya of Aranayaka who has a clinic by the riverbed of Maoya at Aranayake. The local authority is using this as a project to show the Ali Wedakama (treatment of elephants) and attract tourists to Aranayaka. Heated iron rods are used to burn the boils to treat the legs of the elephants. The elephant is not anaesthetised. That is a cruel outdated method.Mr Rajitha Ratwatta has given his two elephants to this place called Eath Suwa Sevana. The Sunday leader a news paper has exposed following things under Charitha`s conflict of interest on the 27th of July 2003 . They have exposed that Mr.Charitha Ratwatta secretary of the Treasury ,abused his authority in order to give elephants free of charge to his brother Mr.Rajitha Ratwatta. Mr.CharithaRatwatta has wanted six elephants from the Pinnawela Elephant Orphanage to be donated free of charge to the Ath Suwa Sewana at Aranayake . The elephant belonged to Kandy kataragama Devale `named `Udaya ` was given to Vedamahaththaya (native doctor)of Aranayake ...This elephant was owned by Rajitha Ratwatta.Rajitha Ratwatta has one more elephant which has killed three people. The elephant `Udaya ` was in musth. On the 16th of September the elephant was taken to Kudaoya and was given a bath by the mahout and the Aranayake vedamahatthaya. Then it was tied to a tree close to the river. Mahout climbed to a coconut tree to cut some coconut leaves for the elephant whilw the vedamahattaya was seated on the concete wall. Suddenly vedamahttaya native doctor was screaming and when the mahout was looking down elephant has jumped and attack the native doctor by his head Then the elephant crushed the head in his mouth and threw the body towards the river. Mr Ratwatta failed to look after the welfare of his elephant . I have exposed that the elephants are suffering in this Eath Suwa Sevana but they wanted to open a tourist center there.
