Quarry operators: Show Perak allows blasting hills

BY V.P. SUJATA

IPOH: Notice boards to identify authorised quarries should be placed at quarry

zones, especially along the highway, to fend off public criticisms that

operators were defacing limestone hills.

Perak Quarry Association president Musa Nordin said the state government should

put up these signboards at quarry sites facing the expressway and roads, which

were most noticeable.

He said quarry operation was a legal activity but the public & #039;s perception

was that the operators had violated the law by damaging limestone hills.

& #147;If the state government places notice boards stating that a certain area

is a quarry zone, then the public would understand better, in that the activity

is legal and operators are authorised to carry out activities there, & #148; he

said.

Presently, there are no such notice boards put up.

There were more than 20 quarry zones in Perak recognised by the state

government, Musa told reporters after attending a special briefing-cum-dialogue

session between the quarry operators, state Land and Mines Department, Mineral

and Geoscience Department and the Department of Environment (DOE) here

yesterday.

He said signboards were especially vital for the Keramat Pulai area where

defaced limestone hills were visible.

Musa said 18 of the 48 active quarries in the state were located at Keramat

Pulai, adding that quarry operators paid about RM30mil in royalty to the state

government last year.

Earlier, state DOE director Abu Hasan Mohd Isa commended quarry operators for

abiding by all environment laws this year.

He said only one summons was issued for the first eight months of the year

compared to the 27 summonses issued last year.

& #147;I am glad that they are adhering to the law and hope they continue and

not get any summonses for the next three months, & #148; he said when chairing a

dialogue session.
