Guest guest
Please Forward Hi everyone, We are now some 8 weeks away from the bear slaughter, and it's time to begin targeting other important people in our campaign to stop NJ's bear hunt. First, let me assure you that we are working diligently on getting our sterilization program implemented. Without strong political support, however, we may not be able to get the Governor to use it to stop the hunt. And in the end, this is all about politics - whomever shows the greater power, the animal protection community or the hunters, will win. I know that we have been bombarding you with alerts, but constant pressure is not only necessary, but without it a hunt will happen. And, as we move closer to the hunt date, we will need to show vigorous strength at every juncture if we are to succeed. With this in mind, we are asking you to contact the following: *The NJ State Democratic Committee As Governor, McGreevey is leader of the democratic party in our state. We must, therefore, put pressure on the State Democratic Committee to get the Governor to stop the hunt. The following came from a recent State Dem. email : " LET US KNOW YOUR OPINION! What is the most compelling reason to vote Democrat this November 4? Let us know your thoughts! Send us an e-mail at opinions@n... or through our website at www.njdems.org/contact.html. " They asked for it - so give it to them! Tell them that this bear hunt is McGreeveys hunt, and it will cost the democrats if it happens. Make sure you let them know that we have an alternative. The New Jersey Democratic State Committee Phone: (609) 392-3367 Fax: (609) 396-4778 opinions@n... ------------------------- We also ask that you contact NJ's two federal Senators. As high ranking Democrats who have the Governors ear, they can play a critical role in getting him to back away from this hunt. *U.S. Senator Frank A. Lautenberg Phone: (202) 224-3224 Fax: (202) 228-4054 email: http://lautenberg.senate.gov/webform.html *U.S. Senator Jon S. Corzine Washington DC 20510 (202) 224-4744 FAX: (202) 228-2197 email: http://corzine.senate.gov/contact.cfm Senator Launtenberg, in a letter to one of his constituents, said " I remain hopeful that the bear population can be controlled through non- lethal methods. " He's has opened up a window, so lets make sure he knows we have a non- lethal alternative. We need everyone to get active! If our Senators get 500-1000 faxes, they will know how important of an issue this is. McGreevey has been steadfast in his support for this hunt. It's time to start shaking things up with the State Democratic party! Stu Chaifetz The following is a sample Letter, from which you can pull info out for your own. Please be aware that you should tailor each letter to the person or organization it is going to. -------------------------- Dear - Governor McGreevey has stated that he is " still very much personally opposed to the idea of a bear hunt, " but that " He wishes there were another way to control the bear population... " It is my pleasure to announce to you that we have that alternative, a way to control the bear population through chemical sterilization. Neutersol® is an FDA approved sterilant that is currently being used successfully on dogs. Thanks to the federal " Animal Medicinal Drug Use Clarification Act of 1994 " , the FDA allows drugs such as Neutersol to be used on bears. We now have in our hands a safe, effective, non-lethal method of controlling bear reproduction that can be used as soon as the state gives us permission. And that is where the problem lies; though there has been massive opposition to this hunt, though the science used to support has been discredited, and though we have done our job and found an alternative, the Governor and DEP have refused to stop the hunt. Obviously, there are political forces at play here, the origins of which are not yet clear, but they appear to have little to do with wanting co-existence between human and bears and everything to do with pushing through a trophy hunt. Therefore, to overcome these forces, we need a stronger political hand. And this is why we are reaching out to you. Your power, your strength, could be the deciding force in this matter. This is no minor matter; if the bear hunt happens, the political ramifications for the democratic party will be tremendous. Therefore I implore you to reach out to Governor McGreevey and ask him to stop this terrible hunt. What we are offering has the possibility of forever changing the way we manage wildlife in our state. We can move from the current 12th century model of kill everything to a 21st century vision that is truly most compassionate and humane.
