With no port willing to accept the ailing animals, almost 4,000 of the 57,000 sheep have died from heat stress and rights groups fear the Cormo Express vessel could become a “floating charnel house” unless action is taken. Bardot sent an open letter to Australian Agriculture Minister Warren Truss describing the situation as sickening and unbearable. “It is absolutely necessary to find a humane solution in order to avoid the agony of 50,000 sheep on the Cormo Express, which will remain the disgrace of your country,” she said in the letter issued by her animal welfare group, Foundation Brigitte Bardot. The Dutch owners of the Cormo Express, dubbed “the ship of death” by the Australian media, say the vessel has been in limbo since Saudi Arabia refused to unload the animals last month because an unacceptable proportion had the disease scabby mouth – a claim disputed by Australian vets. Since then the United Arab Emirates has reportedly refused Canberra's plea to take the sheep free of charge and Pakistan has indicated it will probably do likewise. The Australian government says it is in negotiations to offload the sheep somewhere in the Middle East but has refused to name the countries it is talking to. – AFP
For the latest news from The AP Wire click here

________________________ Your one-stop information portal: The Star Online http://thestar.com.my http://biz.thestar.com.my http://classifieds.thestar.com.my http://cards.thestar.com.my http://search.thestar.com.my http://star-motoring.com http://star-space.com http://star-jobs.com http://star-ecentral.com http://star-techcentral.com 1995-2003 Star Publications (Malaysia) Bhd.
