Guest guest
HELP US WITH OUR POLL! www.dietfacts.com Angry cattle ranchers have inundated the Dietfacts poll about meat and are skewing the results! Please forward widely! This also shows how much they have infiltrated our lists...Read on about how miserable we are making the cattle ranchers lives I guess they don't care about how miserable they are making the cattle, the earth and the humans who are getting cancer and heart attacks from eating cows!! Hello again, Kelcey. This is a long but *hopefully* interesting message. Remember how I told you that DietFacts is featuring a poll about Meatout Mondays? The poll was carefully worded in an effort to be completely unbiased, to put aside my own personal opinions about meat (as my colleagues and I always do with all of our websites) -- and to simply inform people about your movement and gauge their collective response to your idea. The mere mention of your organization and its movement has caused a stir. I expected 200-300 respondants -- the typical number for our little website, for a poll running 2 weeks. Well.... that is not what's occurring! Its only been 3 days and the votes are already nearing 500. Yesterday between 3pm and 4pm CST, I saw the poll results get skewed right before my eyes. The option " No " [meaning " I would not be willing to abstain from eating meat one day each week " ] jumped from 17% (30 votes) to 57% (257 votes). That's 227 new voters in one hour!!! We don't typically get that rate of new, unique traffic. PLUS all the votes were the same: No. I knew something was amiss. Then around 4pm, my email inbox was flooded with long-winded, VERY ANGRY letters. No one demanded that we remove the poll -- rather, they seemed determined to have us remove the DietFacts website altogether. Why??? I receive this letter and found it particularly disturbing: " Dear Kelly, Your anti meat agenda is bogus. I have been on a supplemented (vitamins & high fiber) version of Adkins for 3 years combined with daily 90 minutes of intense excersize lost 60 lbs and kept it off. I have a proposal forDiet Facts, Farm USA, Humane Society USA, PETA, Defenders of Wildlife Et Al.Send us your best vegan athlete(certified meat free 3 years) We will have a 2 man contest, winner take all. Vegans put up $100,000, meat producers put up $100,000, contestant walks away with the entire prize. Each man puts on an 83 pound pack, goes 26 miles over an 11,000 ft. mountain here in front of my home in the dead of winter. 4 hours after leg one a no holds barred fist fight, followed by a mile swim for time. Whoever takes 2 out of three events wins.If we win the environmental/animal rights extremists who are attacking meat as a food go before the cameras and state that their nutritio! nal pronouncements are completly without scientific basis and their attack on hunting and ranching are political in nature. If the Animal rights crowd wins the meat producers support the meat free monday. Is there a vegan on the planet that can measure up to my U.S. Army Ranger son? " Bob Fanning, (rtfanning) Adkins? Hmmm, I thought, maybe a group of Atkins fanatics got together to vote on our poll. They would surely all cast a No vote. And why would these Atkins fans be so angry about a simple poll question? They write to me all the time saying how much they like DietFacts, how useful it is. It didn't make sense. Well... I was fooled-- although some pretended to be, these were not Atkins dieters at all. Then I figured it out: These are angry cattle ranchers! I replied to their irate letters, writing: " Your vote in the current DietFacts webpoll has been counted, and I've read your email. DietFacts is not an animal rights group. It is a nutrition site. We do not (and will not) recommend, endorse, or condemn any particular diet. The only agenda of DietFacts is to provide nutrition facts. We trust that our visitors are smart enough to know their own bodies and minds and to seek professional medical advice when needed. To us, there is no good or bad food -- it is simply data. We leave it up to our visitors to decide for themselves. I'm sorry that you find our current poll unsatisfactory. Perhaps, you would like to contribute your own poll? You may do so here: http://www.dietfacts.com/webpoll.asp?suggest=y At DietFacts, our visitors are free to share their dieting experiences, ask questions of one another, and explore new ideas. Our polls are designed to gauge interest in new dieting trends, personal eating habits, and other health-related concepts that may be of interest to our visitors. When appropriate, we provide a link for our visitors, so they may learn more about this new trend or idea. The current poll is no different. If you are threatened by new ideas, perhaps DietFacts is not the website for you. On the other hand, if you are interested in learning the nutrition content of the foods that you eat, feel free to search our database. " I've continued to receive angry letters and (bewilderingly) even angrier replies to my above reply. They are fewer in number now but angrier than ever. They continued to call DietFacts a " vegan " and " anti-meat " website. *Sigh* Finally, around midnight last night, one rancher (and only one) replied to the actual contents of my letter --and even apologized. He wrote: " My purpose was to challenge Farm.org and other animal right groups who have made life for ranchers and hunters here out west absolutely unbearable.. wont bore you w/ details other than by telling you that they are driving us nuts. When your poll hit our network we were asked to spring into action and go on a counter offensive...sorry to have caught you in a crossfire... " This confirmed my suspicions! They are indeed a bunch of angry cattlemen! Anyway, I just wanted to let you know: This group of cattle ranchers rallied together yesterday to bombard our poll at DietFacts. They completely skewed the poll results. And continue to do so. The poll numbers you see now are no longer from my everyday users; they are mostly from one-time visitors with a political agenda all their own. Aside from this one rancher, none of them probably even know what the DietFacts website is about. And I'm sure, not a single one of them explored beyond our home page. They pretended to be following the Atkins Diet. They pretended to be losing weight. It was all lies. They suckered me into believing that I was getting new legitimate traffic. They are 100% bogus! They don't care one lick about nutrition; they obviously only care about $$$ and their livelihoods. It just makes me sad.
