Good News for Dolphins: Mexican Dolphin Death Camp Shut down!

THE CANCUN DOLPHIN DEATH CAMP IS SHUT DOWN!

While Australia sleeps, who militarily rules now the rogue state of The

Solomon Islands, from where those dolphins (prior to the landing

of Australian troops) illegally were highjacked by a gang of organized

criminals headed by the Canadian businessman, Christopher Porter -

himself protected by heavily armed militia - the Mexican Government

at least showed now some pro-active stand to curb such crimes and

to care for the dolphins, though they had earlier allowed their import.

CITES, the UN-body who is tasked to control such trade globally was

completely help- and useless to stop the illegal traffic. Jorge Soberon

(CITES Scientific Authority in Mexico) even issued licenses.

 

If the Mexican's move was now in preparation of the WTO summit,

where the Mexican security forces might want to deal only with the

thousands of expected protesters against the summit in Cancun and

not in addition with the protesters from the animal rights movement,

is not clear.

 

The establishment PARQUE NIZUC, which is at the helm of the

criminal import and responsible for the cruel detention of the dolphins

is owned by Roberto Zambrano, who calls himself President of a

dubious organization with the hypocrite name PRONATURA,

Blvd. Díaz Ordaz 200, Monterrey, Nuevo León 64650,

E-mail: desint seems and at the core of this mafia-like

operation. He is the son of the Chairman of CEMEX, Lorenzo

Zambrano, the worlds largest cement manufacturer and a shame

for his family as well as the nation of Mexico. Though the family is

usually in bed with government officials, the government of President

Vicente Fox has stopped Parque Nizuc now.

 

As many as 200 dolphins were captured by villagers in the Solomons, who

were paid a fee of $260 USD per dolphin. The market value for dolphins

used in the entertainment field is reported to be in the range of $25,000

to

$30,000 USD, making this a lucrative business for the greedy. Reports

indicate that buyers came to the Solomons from Mexico, Japan, Thailand,

Taiwan and Italy to arrange the purchase of dolphins for marine parks in

those countries. BE ALERT!

 

We call for solidarity actions at all major sea-quariums and dolphin

facilities

around the globe! Support your local animal rights group to continue the

fight for the closure of all dolphin facilities and detention camps

(including

the military ones).

 

Please continue to kindly ask the Mexican Government to now really care

for all the dolphins of that detention centre in Cancun and enable their

safe and

professional rehabilitation and release into the free oceans of their

appropriate natural range (not too close to the dangerous waters of the

Solomons). Mexico also must do more against the killing of dolphins in

their tuna-fisheries activities. Please continue the tourism boycott conc.

Mexico and the Solomons until all Dolphins are free.

Mexico Shuts Criticized Park After Dolphin Death

 

MEXICO: August 27, 2003

 

MEXICO CITY - The Mexican government said this week it had closed an

aquatic theme park in the resort of Cancun at the center of an international

dispute over the trade in wild dolphins.

 

The environmental protection agency Profepa said in a statement the Parque

Nizuc marine park had been shut down after the death of a dolphin at the

weekend.

 

Environmentalists had criticized the park for importing 28 wild bottlenose

dolphins from the Solomon Islands in July. Activists had said the wild mammals

could infect local dolphins and other wildlife off the Yucatan peninsula with

diseases.

 

The agency said in a statement that the closure was " partial and

temporary " and could be lifted if the park kept the Solomon Islands dolphins

confined and carried out a series of medical tests on all the animals there.

 

The dolphin that died had been at the park for five years and may have

suffered from stress, the agency said. Officials at the park were not available

for comment.
