Howard rules out ban on live animal exports

SYDNEY: Australian Prime Minister John Howard yesterday ruled out banning live

animal exports because of cruelty claims, saying the A$1bil (RM2.47bil) a year

trade was too valuable and employed too many people.

Responding to claims vets were forced to cover up the high death rate of

animals being exported to the Middle East, Howard said a ban was unfeasible.

Instead, he said the trade should be made as humane as possible.

“It's worth about a billion dollars a year in export earnings and employs

around 9,000 people,” Howard told commercial radio.

“I deplore cruelty, any ordinary human being would and does, but we have to

keep these things in perspective ? we have to remember that you are talking

about a very valuable economic asset and surely the goal is to make the trade as

humane as possible.”

Australia exports about a million cattle and sheep a year, mainly to the Middle

East and Indonesia, where the animals are slaughtered according to Muslim halal

religious custom.

The RSPCA has described the export of live animals as “institutional cruelty.”
