Ridding Bangkok of homeless, strays before Apec

 

 

BANGKOK: Bangkok authorities will remove 3,000 stray dogs and ask homeless

people to sleep in a vacant plot away from main tourist sites ahead of the Asia

Pacific Economic Co-operation Summit in October, the city's governor said

yesterday.

 

Governor Samak Sundaravej told reporters that homeless people are often drunk

and an eyesore.

 

Homeless people will be asked each night at 11pm to leave the Sanam Luang Park,

near to the Grand Palace and several main temples, Samak said. They will be

asked to spend the night in a vacant plot near the Chao Phraya river, he said.

The dogs will be sent to a shelter in the central province of Uthai Thani.

 

“We will start catching them next month,'' Samak said. He did not mention what

would happen to the animals once the summit was over.

 

The Apec summit, a gathering of 21 leaders, will be held on Oct 20-21 in

Bangkok and will follow a series of ministerial and other meetings beginning Oct

14 in the Thai capital. Thousands of delegates and journalists from around the

world are expected to attend. –AP
