Sahabat Alam: Most mini zoos in bad shape

PETALING JAYA: Sahabat Alam Malaysia (SAM) objects to the proposed construction

of a mini reptile zoo and an aquarium at the Kuala Selangor Nature Park.

In a statement yesterday, SAM said it was already appalled at the state of mini

zoos in several states where mammals, reptiles and birds were kept in bad

conditions.

SAM said its surveys in the late 90s showed that facilities in mini zoos had

poor exhibit designs and lacked veterinarians and staff.

“Sometimes, animals must totally depend on the public for their food due to

food or staff shortages,” it said, adding that food hand-outs from the public

should be discouraged.

SAM said that in July 2001, it sent a memo to the Science, Technology and

Environment Ministry and the Local Government and Housing Ministry urging them

to stop the building of such facilities and to improve the condition of all

existing mini zoos.

“However, there has been no response to our appeal,” it said.

Work to construct the mini zoo and aquarium began last week and the

construction by the Kuala Selangor district council has caused concern among

residents and nature lovers.

On Monday, state environment chairman Datuk Mokhtar Ahmad Dahlan said he would

direct the district council, the Kuala Selangor district office and the Malaysia

Nature Society to submit a comprehensive report on the modifications done to the

park.
