Describing the two-year-old community-based organisation & #146;s work as impressive, Reimann said the & #147;new kid on the block & #148; was fairly realistic and had a good understanding of the complexities of the issues in Cameron Highlands. & #147;They are a constructive player who will have a positive influence on the ongoing situation in Cameron Highlands, & #148; he added. Reimann said he had been up to Cameron Highlands 20 times over the past six years of his service in Kuala Lumpur but Reach & #146;s activities and efforts had given him a new and deeper understanding of the problems that the hill resort was experiencing. Last month, the Danish embassy announced a three-year RM1.1mil grant to both Reach and WWF Malaysia from the Danish International Development Assistance (Danida) to be used for projects on water resource, solid waste and land use management. Reimann said he has seen increasing ownership and participation in environmental issues at all levels of Malaysian society since he came to the country. & #147;Malaysia & #146;s understanding of environmental issues is very advanced, & #148; he noted. On the continuing collaboration between the Danish and Malaysian governments on environmental issues, Reimann said that both parties had identified energy, waste management and biodiversity as new priority areas. & #147;We have already allocated RM15mil under the Malaysian-Danish Environmental Co-operation Programme for energy efficiency and renewable energy projects over the next three years, & #148; he said. & #147;We hope to finalise the overall strategy on waste management by early next year, and hope to adopt projects for the next three years by the second quarter of next year, & #148; Reimann said. He said detailed planning on biodiversity would commence after the waste management projects were finalised. He said that the annual allocation under the co-operation programme was between RM25mil and RM30mil and that the Danish government had contributed more than RM250mil since 1994 to Malaysian projects. Reimann, however, said that the contributions were only a small part of the cost of the projects, which were mainly borne by Malaysia. <p> ________________________ Your one-stop information portal: The Star Online http://thestar.com.my http://biz.thestar.com.my http://classifieds.thestar.com.my http://cards.thestar.com.my http://search.thestar.com.my http://star-motoring.com http://star-space.com http://star-jobs.com http://star-ecentral.com http://star-techcentral.com 1995-2003 Star Publications (Malaysia) Bhd.
