Expedition gathering data on species in Upper Belum

 

 

IPOH: A scientific expedition to the virtually untouched Upper Belum forest

reserve is expected to unearth new findings on its flora and fauna, said Perak

Culture, Tourism and Women & #8217;s Affairs Committee chairman Datuk Mazidah

Zakaria.

 

She said the week-long expedition, which began on Saturday, was aimed at

gathering a database of species in the Upper Belum area.

 

A 110-man team of scientists from local universities and the Malaysian Nature

Society, including botanists, geologists, entomologists, zoologists and other

researchers, was expected to take part in the exhibition.

 

“This is the first major expedition to Upper Belum and there has been no proper

inventory.

 

“As that part of the forest is untouched, the scientists expect new findings.

They & #8217;re quite excited,” she said after launching the Ipoh City

Council & #8217;s monthly community health programme yesterday.

 

Mazidah said members of the expedition would return on Aug 1 and would be

expected to give a briefing on their findings.

 

Apart from documenting the richness of Upper Belum & #8217;s biological sources,

she said, information would also be collected on the local forest ecology and

habitat.

 

“I believe the expedition will not only increase our data on flora and fauna

which has existed in Belum for thousands of years, it will also enhance the

image of Belum as a state park,” she added.
