Guest guest
HOLD Kinship Letter/Stop Bill To Legalize Greyhound Slaughter----- Original Message ----- Kinship Circle Wednesday, July 09, 2003 9:26 AM HOLD Kinship Letter/Stop Bill To Legalize Greyhound Slaughter Due to seriously conflicting information from an array of greyhound-affiliated groups, the HSUS and others, Kinship Circle feels it is best at this time to HOLD the letter campaign posted yesterday. PLEASE DO NOT SEND: 7/8/03--Kinship Circle LETTER/Stop Bill To Legalize Greyhound Slaughter As is often the case, I fear the discrepancy in facts related to Alabama House Bill Number 37--purportedly to classify greyhounds as livestock and legalize killing them--will evolve into an internet " HE SAID/SHE SAID " bicker-fest with everyone trying to sling the blame on one another. No one is to blame. We are all hard working activists doing our best to keep pace with the tidal wave of news reports, facts and stories that flood our email boxes daily. Words such as " I was used to circulate a lie! Unfortunately, when something like this happens, the animals are the ones to suffer " are so entirely destructive to the spirit of our movement, they bring tears to my eyes. In fact, this was the main subject of AR2003--our support of each other as activists. THE ANIMALS ARE THE ONES TO SUFFER WHEN WE CHOOSE TO SPEND MORE TIME NAME-SLINGING than standing behind each other. Please remember that Kinship Circle is only the " messenger, " as always, weighing the credibility of information and sources to compose letter campaigns. While I still believe the sources for this letter are trustworthy, the facts they presented, in this case, were misleading. Following is a statement from GREY2K USA. This is the statement that has prompted Kinship Circle to cancel this letter campaign. Carey Theil <grey2kcarey carey Tue, 8 Jul 2003 12:15:09 -0700 (PDT) info Fwd: info Dear Friend: Unfortunately, there are a number of inaccuracies in this letter-writing alert. First, House Bill 37 has already been signed into law in Alabama. Second, House Bill 37 did not classify greyhounds as livestock. What it did do is create, for the first time, a law against killing greyhounds in any way other than lethal injection. Before HB 37 passed, there was no law on the books to prevent greyhounds from being killed by any means in Alabama. Many groups, including the Humane Society of the United States, supported HB 37 because they saw it as a step in the right direction. GREY2K USA did not take a position on HB 37 because we do not believe that regulating how greyhounds are killed will solve the inherent problems within the greyhound industry. Yours, Carey Theil, President GREY2K USA =============================================================== Many other lists are circulating the original alert, asking for letters to oppose HB 37. You may wish to withdraw those alerts as well. Thanks for your patience, Brenda Shoss, Kinship Circle BEAR WITNESS. SPEAK OUT. DEMAND CHANGE. ACT.
