Guest guest
I am sorry that I circulated the wrong info. I had no idea. I received the first alert, and since it came from Kinship Circle, and listed, Greyhound Action www.greyhoundaction.co.uk Through Their Eyes, The National Animal Abuse Registry as the source of info. I believed it! I had no reason not to. Now I am wondering who was the source of the misleading info. as I am not happy that I was used to circulate a lie! Unfortunately, when something like this happens, the animals are the ones to suffer. Again I appologize for my part in this. Kinship Circle LETTER/Stop Bill To Legalize Greyhound Hi Rita, In case you haven't seen it already, below is the message we've just sent out on this issue. Best Wishes, We recently circulated a message from Nick Mays asking people to help fight a Bill in the State of Alabama, which he claimed would re-classify greyhounds as livestock and allow them to be killed by any unlicenced individual. We have now received the following message from GREY2K USA:- Friends: House Bill 37 has already been signed into law in Alabama. Also, it is not true that this bill would have reclassified greyhounds as livestock. This bill was an attempt to close a loophole in current law by requiring that if greyhounds are killed in Alabama, they must be killed by lethal injection. Before this bill passed, greyhounds in Alabama could by legally killed by any means. GREY2K USA did not take a position on this bill, because we do not believe that the most effective way to end the cruelty of dog racing is to require that greyhounds be killed in a humane fashion. We believe that dog racing should be outlawed. Yours, Carey Theil, President GREY2K USA It appears that greyhound protection campaigners in the USA adopted varying attitudes towards the Bill. This is rather confusing, but can perhaps be explained by the following from the Humane Society of the United States' website:- (House Bill 37)Mandates that lethal injection must be the sole means of euthanizing greyhounds. Also prohibits taking a greyhound out of the state for the purpose of euthanasia. The first violation of this act would be a Class C misdemeanor; second and subsequent violations would be Class A misdemeanors. While the legislation appears to give further protection to greyhounds, it actually opens a loophole to the current animal cruelty law, which provides felony-level penalties. Because this bill has now become law, those who kill greyhounds by means other than lethal injection may only be charged with a misdemeanor, no matter how cruel or egregious the method of killing may have been. Whatever people feel, nothing can be done about the Bill now anyway, as it has already been signed into law.
