Have a heart for animals, even strays

I REFER to HK Tan’s letter, “Stray cats pose health threat” (Sunday Star, June

8).

As much as I agree with Tan that stray animals may pose a threat to health and

be a nuisance, there must be more humane ways of dealing with the problem than

culling the entire population.

I would like to stress firstly that the local cat is not related in any way to

the civet cat, which itself is something of a misnomer since it is not a cat at

all.

Singaporean authorities have also found out that the cats culled by them did

not carry the virus, with the exception of one, and even that solitary animal

had only a trace of the virus.

As a way of curbing the growth of the stray population, I suggest that animal

owners neuter their pets, especially if they are free-roaming animals.

Secondly, perhaps the Department of Veterinary Services could help to spay

stray cats and keep them till their stitches are removed before releasing them

again. This way, the existing population can be controlled.

Please, have a heart for our animals and give them a chance at life.

There are many other hazards to human health such as people who spit,

unhygienic handling of food, crows, filthy coffee-shops and food courts, rubbish

strewn everywhere, and the generally low quality of cleanliness in public places

and neighbourhoods.
