Guest guest
May 31, 2003 Death row for exotic animals By PETER WORTHINGTON -- Toronto Sun The Bergeron Exotic Animals Sanctuary in Picton, in Prince Edward County, is being threatened with closure. This is partly because of a change in zoning laws, and partly because the Medical Officer of Health is worried about public health and safety. In a dozen years no one has ever been hurt, injured or infected, at the sanctuary; and no dangerous animal has ever escaped. Its record is impeccable. There's no money to be made in saving animals, and the Bergerons are stretched thin, even with wide support from people in the area to keep the sanctuary going. The sanctuary is even advertised as an attraction by the local tourist board. What makes the Bergeron sanctuary special is that it is not a roadside zoo. Virtually every one of some 150 animals, including six Siberian tigers, six lions, cougars, lynx, panthers, and a pack of wolves, were slated to be killed before the Bergerons rescued them. Animals are not bred there. The tigers, for example, have been neutered. The sole purpose of the sanctuary is a last resort to rescue doomed animals, every one of which is a story. While public concern is high across Canada, the Bergerons badly need money for lawyers' fees to fight the political and bureaucratic campaign against them, and for fencing and improvement of the facilities. Zoo and humane society people who have inspected the place agree that the animals are well cared for, are in splendid condition, and share great affection with Joe and Pat Bergeron. If you feel these incredible animals are worth saving, you can send a cheque to: Save the Animals, c/o Toronto Sun, 333 King St. E., Toronto, M5A 3X5. The monies received by the Sun will be forwarded to Joe and Pat Bergeron. This is not a registered charity, thereby tax receipts will not be issued. We shall let you know what happens. Letters to the editor should be sent to <editor. Take sides. Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim. Silence encourages the tormentor, never the tormented. --Elie Wiesel
