RM50,000 worth of exotic meat, skins seized in raid

KUALA LUMPUR: A variety of exotic meat and wildlife animal skins including that

of a tiger, pangolins and pythons worth more than RM50,000 were seized in a raid

at a restaurant owner & #146;s house in Bahau on Wednesday night.

Negri Sembilan Wildlife and National Parks (Perhilitan) Department director

Jamalun Nasir Ibrahim said enforcement officers also found seven pythons and two

stuffed owls in a storage area of the house as well as exotic meat including

monkey, fox, flat-headed cat (kucing hutan), monitor lizard, mousedeer and deer,

which had been skinned.

& #147;We arrested the 51-year-old restaurant owner who will be charged in the

magistrate & #146;s court next week, & #148; he said at a press conference at the

Perhilitan Department in Cheras here yesterday.

He said the man, who was also believed to be a wholesaler and supplier of

exotic meat to restaurants, would face up to 11 charges for possession of and

trading in protected wildlife and could be fined up to RM3,000 or jailed for two

years, or both, upon conviction, for each charge.

& #147;These animals are mostly endangered species and we have got to do all we

can to protect them from becoming extinct, & #148; said Jamalun Nasir.

He urged the public to continue to inform the department of such illegal

activities.

Enforcement unit chief Abdul Jalal Kasim said even though the department had

issued licences for certain restaurants to serve exotic meat, it had to be done

according to rules.

He said the department could revoke the licence if a restaurant owner was found

guilty and fined more than RM500 by the court for committing any offence under

the Protection of Wildlife Act.
