Malacca Zoo treating injured elephant

BY LEE YUK PENG

MALACCA: A young elephant, caught in a wild boar trap at a forest reserve in

Rompin, Pahang, has been sent to the Malacca Zoo for treatment.

The injured animal was spotted by villagers and rescued by wildlife officers

last Thursday.

It was brought here on Sunday where zoo officials were now nursing it back to

health.

The seven-year-old calf was caught in a wire snare, which wildlife hunters

usually use to trap wild boar.

Zoo officials have named their new charge & #147;Muadzam & #148;, after the

Muadzam Shah forest reserve where it was found limping with an injured left leg.

& #147;It would have died from hunger or infection, & #148; said zoo director Mohd

Nawayai Ishak.

Although Muadzam managed to free itself from the trap, Mohd Nawayai said the

wire was embedded in its flesh, causing it to suffer much pain.

Gangrene had already set in as the calf, weighing about 500kg, is believed to

have been limping about with the wound for at least two weeks, he said.

& #147;Muadzam, left behind by the rest of the herd, could not travel far

because of its injury, & #148; Mohd Nawayai said, adding that the baby

elephant & #146;s mother was missing.

Sounds akin to screams were heard from Muadzam & #146;s cage at the zoo

yesterday.

Wildlife officers had to use two adult elephants to pacify Muadzam before they

could apply antibiotics on its leg.

The young elephant was also given iodine and Vitamin B Complex to help it

recover.

It would take at least a month for Muadzam to recover and it would likely be

kept at the zoo after that, said Mohd Nawayai.
