I am writing to ask for your help in our struggle to stop people dumping their

pets because they think they'll catch SARS from them (also see attached

newspaper article about Beijing).

If you know anyone who might be an expert in the field of SARS (i.e Doctors,

Microbiologists, immunologists, vets and the hundreds of other fields that may

be involved - and not just in HK) could you please forward this to them and ask

them to get back to me Nikki Green at

nikgreen who will be coordinating this.

Also any journalists willing to do an article to help would be much welcomed!

Time is of the essence as animals are getting dumped everyday.

Thanks very much.

Regards

Nikki

Dear Specialist:)

We at the HKSPCA and the Society for Abandoned Animals want to take out a half

page advert in the Chinese press to make the following declaration (see below),

as the incidence of pet abandonment is getting totally out of hand (see also

attached article on Beijing (who's Govt. we'll be trying to persuade next.)

We also wish to have a press conference to coincide with this and hope that you

specialists in the field of SARS who can endorse this declaration will come

along to it and get their photos taken with a pet (or at least have your name at

the end of the declaration in the newspaper if you're not in HK).

We feel this will be the only way to get our society to stop dumping their pets.

Can I get your feedback please on this declaration which I have come up with

after talking to several different specialists involved in fighting SARS in HK .

It doesn't have to be a guarantee merely something that sounds right that you

would be happy to endorse for the sake of hundreds (and thousands if we go into

China with this) companion animals.

a) Do you agree with the statement (if not why)?

b) Would you be willing to endorse it along with other experts in the field.

Time is of the essence with this as we hope to have the Press conference on Fri

May 9th, probably at a hotel in HK.

Regards

Nikki Green

Ignorance leads to panic and the unnecessary suffering of our companion animals.

Get the facts first before you start discarding your pets.

Experts agree that the basic hygiene that one should normally employ when

dealing with all animals is sufficient to ensure that you will not get SARS from

your pet.

The virus causing SARS is 'host specific' - which means only one species can be

infected by it and spread it.

When you heard that the SARS virus most likely came from an animal (and nobody

knows what species of animal) they mean that the original animal virus mutated

in ONE animal and was then passed on to ONE person and that person (and people

that he came into contact with) is spreading it, not our pets.

*This declaration is endorsed by the following experts in this field....
