Turning a blind eye to squatters

I READ with interest and concern the ongoing development on Redang Island off

the coast of Terengganu (StarTwo, April 15). There & #8217;s another disturbing

development on the Perhentian islands further north.

Many squatters have set up lucrative businesses on government land right on the

beach which is supposed to be public land and off-limits to any form of

development.

I am perplexed and appalled at the mushrooming of budget-class accommodation

and restaurants which are popular with foreign tourists who stay on for weeks at

a time.

However, these squatters have brought much contamination to the pristine waters

and marred the natural beauty of the islands. Just consider how and where they

dispose of their rubbish.

I brought this up with one of the exco members of the Terenggau state

government. He admitted that this had gone out of control.

It seems that these “kampung entrepreneurs” have the upper hand for to chase

them out could create some form of upheaval, both politically and socially. The

fact that they are illegally occupying the land seems irrelevant.

What is the District Office doing about this? Why are they renewing the

temporary land permits without any time limit? Is something amiss here?

I am greatly concerned that the fragile ecosystem of the islands in Terengganu

will be compromised by the actions of greedy entrepreneurs and the complacency

of certain bureaucrats.

Our natural heritage is at stake. We can't afford to sit back and do nothing.
