News in brief

BANGKOK: Municipal authorities wielding large sacks captured 21 stray dogs

yesterday from a neighbourhood here where a pack of canines had attacked and

seriously injured an 11-year-old boy.

Ton Attama was hospitalised in critical condition after being bitten about 50

times in a frenzied attack by about 20 dogs as he walked to his home on

Wednesday near a technological institute, said Bangkok Metropolitan Authority

permanent secretary Natanon Thaweesilp.

About 30 dogs live on the campus of the institute, surviving on leftovers from

its cafeteria, said Boonyong Sookot, a security guard who rescued the boy.

He said the dogs had been starving since the school's summer break began three

weeks ago, and even ate a dead dog last week, Boonyong said. & #8211; AP

BEIJING: A Chinese passenger was ejected from a plane here after he caused panic

by joking that he was infected with Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS),

local media said yesterday.

A China Eastern Airlines plane was preparing to take off from Capital Airport

for the eastern city of Hefei yesterday evening when the man called over a

steward and said “I've got SARS,” Beijing Youth Daily said.

The man, identified only by his surname, Zhu, caused immediate panic among

passengers who overheard his remark, the newspaper said.

The captain informed air traffic controllers, who sent a team of aviation

officials and medical staff to the plane.

After doctors examined Zhu and found he had no indication of SARS, he told them

“I was joking!” the newspaper said.

China Eastern refused to carry Zhu on the flight and he left the plane with two

friends, it said.

The plane took off for Hefei some 30 minutes late. & #8211; dpa

BANGKOK: A Thai opposition leader has decried Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra

as a Saddam Hussein in the making who is whittling away at cheques and balances

and may soon build statues of himself, a report said yesterday.

“As he (Thaksin) leads the country over a longer and longer period of time, his

power will continue to rise, much like that of President Saddam in Iraq,” Chamni

Sakdiset, deputy secretary-general of the Democrat Party, said in the Nation

newspaper.” And it will not be long before he has his own statues built.”
